Frankincense (Incense) is one of the special items, when used, Pokémon from nearby areas will reach out to you and can be caught. At the start of Pokemon GO, you will receive two incense, but luckily it can be found or bought. The price table is as follows:
80 pokemon - 1 incense
500 pokemon - 8 incense
1,250 pokemon - 25 incense

After you do this, you will see incense hovering above you on the screen: by clicking on it, you activate it again. The gas balloon that appears next to you is valid for 30 minutes, regardless of whether you are online or offline. Consider this when activating.
When using incense, not only can legendary or rare Pokémon come to you, you also get the chance to catch a lot more Pokémon that are nearby. Among them, there may even be unusual ones.
