Before making a choice, it is worth mentioning that we can divide the Ancients into three categories:
— Tanks (Bubblehearth and Kensei)
— Attackers (Ultimus and Borehowl)
— Healers (Lunaria and Solaria)
For some reason, most people choose healers and take Lunaria or Solaria. Of course, you make choices early in the game when you don’t know how good the monsters are ... and therefore it’s a mistake.
At the very least, I find healers to be the worst choice because you can easily compensate for their healing abilities with Suzaku and Genbu asters, Glyphs or other monsters. And by the way - you will never have so much damage to actively heal it.
The best choice is Ultimus
He would be my top pick - at least until the middle of the game, he is a real beast and very tough ancient. His multi-level damage dealing skills make him extremely powerful, especially if you can keep him alive for longer periods of time.
The huge damage effect is extremely important, even when fighting tough tanks like Bubblehearth or Kensei.
# 2 - Borehowl
Borehowl is a really good Ancient that gets even better as you level up, but in the early stages it is still worse than Ultimus. Its main strength is the Lich effect, which can be further increased, which means it can deal more damage and last longer.
# 3 - Bubblehearth
I call it the "immortal tank" because it fully restores health with each new level. But that's all he does: he stays alive and can thus extend the lives of the rest of your team. But if you have good attackers, Bubblehearth is not very useful.
However, it is definitely better than other options (especially Kensei), so you can safely choose it if you want to play as a tank and more traditional gameplay with high chances of survival (or painfully slow death).
